William Wickens, who also serves as the council’s representative and chairman of the town’s Planning Commission, is on vacation and could not be reached for a comment about his intentions.
The names of several other town residents have been mentioned in speculation about possible candidacies, but so far none have filed the necessary paperwork. Those contacted declined to comment on the rumors and speculation about their intentions.
In addition to the declaration of candidacy, a second form, the Certificate of Candidate Qualification, must be filed with the State Board of Elections in Richmond by 5 p.m. Friday, March 9. Two additional forms, a petition of qualified voters and a financial disclosure statement, are only required for towns of Washington’s size.
For residents of the town who wish to vote in the May 1 election, the last day to register in order to be eligible to vote is Friday, March 31. The registrar’s office is open each Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on March 31 for last minute registrants. Anyone who wishes to file as a candidate for the town council must fill out a declaration of candidacy form. They are available at the office of the clerk of the circuit court, Ms.' Bruce (675-3621), from Mr. Gooch (675-3474), or from the State Board of Elections in Richmond (toll-free 800 552-9745).
