erring to the Sheriffs Department traffic control duty, which stops traffic to let buses enter and leave the schools in the morning and again in the afternoon. He said that he didn’t think the Sheriffs Department would be able to supply enough deputies to stop traffic for buses.
“We’ll have to deputize some teachers,” Hampton District representative Bryant Lee said.
School Board Chairwoman Beverly Massie urged Dr. Gangel to contact the highway department and try to get a second crossover point at the high school. “Let them know of our grave concern,” she said.
Dr. Gangel also told the board that high school Principal John Toth had been asked to try to get bids for replacing the main sewer pipe at the high school. “It’s continuing to be clogged,” he said. When repairmen come out “it’s more and more difficult for them to get snakes through it,” he said.
He also said that three more circulators have broken, which are used for the heating systems at both schools.
Dr. Gangel pointed out that the current budget contains no money for expenses like replacing the sewer pipe or repairing the circulators. “We’re proceeding in the red,” he said. As the school system gets nearer to the end of the budget year, he said he will recommend fund transfers from other line items which have not been completely spent to bring the line for replacement and repair of equipment into balance.
In other action, the School Board:
• conducted the annual evaluation of the superintendent. “The board is most pleased with his performance,” Mrs. Massie said.
• learned about the new system for recertifying teachers. Teachers’ certificates now must be renewed every five years. Instead of taking six credits of college course work every five years, teachers will be able to renew their certificates through a mixture of college course work and other professional activities.
• learned that Mr. and Mrs. Robert Darby are interested in giving a scholarship of up to $1,000 per year for four years for Rappahannock students to study math, science or engineering in college.
• delayed for another month making a final decision on how days lost due to bad weather will be made up.
• learned that the high school roof has been repaired and no longer leaks.
• concurred with Dr. Gangel’s decision to seek a fellowship from the Keizai Koho Foundation to study in Japan for two weeks this summer.
• appointed Elizabeth Blubaugh as the new volunteer coordinator and Gertrude Slaughter as the new elementary school custodian.
