True to his word, the Panthers worked on several defenses in practice which the Rams had not seen before, and it seemed to work as their offense was confused and unable to get a consistent attack plan going. He said the full-court press and double teaming on Robinson was something that wasn’t on the Panthers’ game films, “and it threw them off.”
The press limited Robinson to two points in the first half, led by Benji Roy’s excellent man-to-man play on the 6’ 2” senior. “Benji had an outstanding first half,” Coach Leake said.
But Roy is recovering from an illness, and his weakness was evident in the second half, when Robinson recovered his confidence to score 16 points, pacing the Strasburg offense. The Rams outscored Rappahannock again in the third period, 18-15, although the early deficit left them still trailing by nine points at the end of the third period, 45-36.
The Rams had erased the deficit early in the quarter, pulling ahead by one point, 31-30 on a Billy Hall basket. The Rams lost their next posession on a bad pass which soared out of bounds, and the Panthers converted the in-bounds pass when Bobby Jenkins hit a jumper in traffic for the Panthers, and Rappahannock never again relenquished the lead.
The Rams continued to press through the fourth quarter, again out-scoring the Panthers, 18 points to 15. And they slowly narrowed the point spread, until with just 34 seconds left in the contest Robinson hit a long outside shot for three points, pulling the Rams within one, 62-61.
Those were the last points Strasburg tallied, however, as Julian Groves was fouled and hit both free throws, widening the lead to 64-61. The Rams then wasted a scoring opportunity when three shots failed to drop, and the Panthers’ defensive star Francisco Vicente grabbed the rebound and drew a foul.
Vicente also sunk both his free throws, and as time ran out the Panthers were up by five, 66-61.
The big senior exchange student from Spain turned in his usual aggressive game on the boards, leading the Panthers with 12 rebounds and adding 13 points for the offense.
And Julian Groves turned in another high-scoring performance, pacing the Panthers with 24 points
