How far we've come
This month marks the annual celebration of Black History Month.
It is a time when all Americans, not just black Americans, should pause and remember the accomplishments and sacrifices of all our country’s citizens — of all colors — who have advanced the cause of racial equality.
This year, as we mark also the 25th anniversary of the beginning of organized resistance to segregation, it is a time to measure the progress which has been made in the past generation.
Much has been accomplished. There are now black congressmen, mayors and —just last month — our own Commonwealth became the first state in the nation to gain a bbwtoman as its governor. ■J. / Whether or not Jesse Jackson would make a good president is debatable; but the fact that his candidacy would hayeJbeen unthinkable a quarter-century ago is not.
