FRONT ROYAL — After handily dispatching the Manassas Park Cougars in the season finale at home last Friday, Rappahannock advanced through the quarter-final round of the Bull Run District tournament Tuesday night, defeating Strasburg, 66-61.
The Panthers took control of the game early, stunning the Rams with a string of 10 unanswered points in the first quarter, leading at the buzzer, 16-6. Three walking fouls called on Strasburg dulled their offense, forcing turnovers and stopping their drives cold.
But the Rams battled back in the second quarter behind the shooting of junior Chris Mathews. Mathews paced the Strasburg offense, and the Rams actually outscored Rappahannock in the second period, 18-14.
The Panthers were able to contain the potent scoring threat of Charles Robinson, who Coach Gary Leake warned before the game would be Rappahannock’s nemesis. “We won’t be able to stop him, but the key will be containment,” he predicted.
