The Virginia Department of Transportation sealed the popular roadside spring on U.S. 211 west of Sperryville Monday, ending the controversy over the safety of the water source.
The department, according to Resident Engineer Robert Moore, is unwilling to take a chance that someone might become ill from drinking the untreated water, which flows though the granite rock from a source high on the mountain in Shenandoah National Park.
The decision, Mr. Moore said Monday morning, “was reached af-, *"~teT considerable 'input fromv<the" Health Department.... and their in-, ability to certify it as a safe source of drinking water."
The Virginia Department of Health, since the controversy erupted in late February following a complaint, has maintained that since the source is unprotected and the water is untreated, that the public cannot be assured that the water is not contaminated.
According to District Sanitarian Charles Shepherd, tests done on the water some years ago showed the presence of coliform bacteria, indicating that the underground spring is contaminated by surface water somewhere above the spring.
