While the exchange program provides airfare and insurance costs for Woodard while abroad, estimated cost for expenditures while away are $2,000.
“I have to pay for my own passport,” he said, adding visas and other information has been taken care through the exchange program — placing 20 students from five states in various localities in Germany. “I’ve been pretty satisfied with what they expect of me,” he said, adding his year abroad will set him one year back in his anticipated college career but will help him later on resumes and job applications.
“This is a real challenge,” he said, adding he looks forward to the year he will spend in school while there, as well as a new family.
Studying business-related subjects in high school and hoping to major in business in college, Woodard said this program was the only one offered to vocational students. “I’m not sure what kind of school I will attend” while there, he said, explaining much of the information is yet to come.
