they can’t get flour to make their pizzas and cakes. Who gets flour in the USSR isn’t something Estonians have control over, even if they grow the wheat.
While Gorbachev may want to restructure the econonrny, he hasn’t thought of a way to do it so that the many people eager for it can operate successfully. Gorbachev is a Communist just as Churchill was an imperialist. Many Russians and others don’t find him working with and for them when it comes to redistributing power in the USSR. These are the views of Georgian and Estonian nationalists, as well as some Russians, and it explains the recent election, while we were in the USSR, of Boris Yeltsin to the presidency of the Russian Republic.
One change Gorbachev has made that we heard is of use to the rebel forces all over: the institution of a USSR-wide INTERFAX news agency enabling people in all the soviets to keep instantly in touch with one another and get one another’s news. Knowledge is power and the colonial groups feel some kinship with one another, although over all, I gather not much. The Soviet republics are often as different from one another as Canada is from Mexico.
I came home feeling that the Soviet empire is on its way out sooner rather than later — and the sooner the better for Russia. Violent resistance in behalf of national aspirations is disturbing to everyone and passive resistance will hold up needed and hoped for change.
In the center of Tbilisi, Georgia, an heroic statue of Lenin is guarded 24 hours a day by uniformed soldiers to prevent its being torn down. Down the street, every night citizens congregate to discuss their freedom in front of the principal government building where 20 protestors were killed and thousands were gassed by Soviet soldiers in April, 1989.
In Estonia, there is a round-theclock militia guarding a central government building, over which flies the Estonian flag, to pre-Soviet soldiers from taking it over without resistance. People told us they were so occupied with making revolution they had no time for anything else.
