As Rappahannock County’s several exchange students pack their bags and prepare for the journey home, Rappahannock County High School’s new alumnus Tony Woodard is preparing for his journey abroad.
Accepted into the four-year-old Congress-Bundestag Vocational Youth Exchange Program, Woodard leaves Washington, D.C. on July 1, after a five day orientation program there, to West Germany for one year of study.
“I’ve done everything possible to get this exchange,” the excited 17year-old graduate said, adding he has always wanted to make an exchange though the language barrier had discouraged previous attempts — one to France and a summer program to Switzerland.
Beating all odds, Tony will study with the Open Door Student Exchange.
“The program had a requirement that exchanges must be 18-yearsold,” Woodard said, adding his 18th birthday is not until October and only because someone dropped out of the program is he able to participate in the exchange.
