Real Estate ® Eileen M. Day REALTOR MORTGAGE LIFE INSURANCE Mortgage life insurance is insurance coverage that will pay off any existing mortgage debts should the homeowner die. The insurance is decreas ing term, which means that the monthly payment premium re mains constant while the actual amount paid off decreases each month since the mort gage balance decreases each month. Since the cost of coverage is relatively inexpensive, and cna often be directly added to your mortgage payments, many homeowners have availed themselves of this insur ance. Is this insurance a must? That’s an individual decision. Many experts feel that this par ticular kind of coverage is un necessary—that a homeowner is better prepared by having a comprehensive life policy which would include funds to pay off the mortgage than a separate policy limited strictly to mortgage payoff. The fact that banks gra ciously agree to accept pre mium payments without additional costs indicates that they re the actual beneficiaires of this policy.
