Since gasoline distributors often own the tanks under stores, gasoline stations and other gas pump locations, it is the distributor’s — or tanks owner’s — responsibility to comply with the law. Depending on when the tanks were buried, the deadlines differ: tanks set before 1965 must have met the requirements by last December or been removed; tanks set between 1965-69 must meet the regulations by Dec. 31 of this year; tanks set between 1970-74 must meet the requirements by Dec. 31, 1991; tanks set between 1974-79 meet their deadline on Dec. 31, 1992 and those buried between 1980 and Dec. 31, 1988 must be upgraded by Dec. 31, 1993.
