“I made it to be removable,” he said with a wave of one hand. “I would not dare move it now.” The track sits at table height and forms a loose “U” shape around the large basement room. Underneath the table-track, wires and switches, switchboards and electrical components interwine giving the illusion of a very complex electrical network. His hands are so familiar to location of switches, his eyes remain on the trains as they move into action, starting slowly but soon speeding around the track and into a tunnel. “It’s not all fun,” he said with a smile spreading across his face. “Engines are always jumping the track. Switches get too hot and melt. It’s a lot of revising and revising,” he said of his network of tracks, once laid out on paper but long since outgrown his detailed drawings. Mr. Nikolajevic shows his Western territory to friends, upon request. “I get excited when I show it off,” he said, a broad smile betraying his pride.
