The 4-H Teen Adventure Team is a pilot project involving youth and leaders from Rappahannock, Madison, King George and Caroline counties. Now in its second year, the purpose is to provide older 4-H youth with outdoors experience while training them as leaders for the younger 4-H children.
The team is under the direction of Dr. Pat Trotter of Virginia Tech. If the project is successful, Mr. Williams said, the Extension Service plans to expand it statewide.
So far, the team’s activities have included several canoe trips, hikes and excursions to different sites in both the Piedmont and the Tidewater, where the other half of the group lives.
So far, the Adventure Team project is “going real well,” Mr. Williams said. It involves 16 to 18 teens and adult leaders from Rappahannock County, and similar numbers from the other counties.
Mr. Williams noted that the team also owes thanks to Amiss;ville’s Cliff Latham, who lent several canoes for the overnight trip.
