To the editor:
Those who control the campaign of David Smith, the Democrat opposing third term Congressman D. French Slaughter Jr., are attempting to mislead Seventh District voters by contending a conservative Democrat would be more influential in Congress than a Republican.
If Mr. Smith is truly a conservative Democrat he would learn (quickly) some hard facts of life, if sent to Washington.
The fact is, as Mr. Smith surely knows, since the days of Lyndon Johnson’s so-called “Great Society”, the majority of Democrats in Congress have been tax-and-spend liberals who don’t bother to conceal their contempt for Democratic colleagues who vote conservatively.
The record is clear that the small number of conservative Democrats in Congress, even those who gain seniority, get back-of-the-hand treatment from the liberal Democratic leadership.
When Phil Gramm, now the Republican U.S. Senator from Texas, was a conservative Democratic Congressman in the early 1980’s and had the temerity to support President Reagan’s call for a tax cut, the liberal Democrats led by Speaker Tip O’Neill of Massachusetts effectively drummed him out of the party.
Congressman Mel Price, conservative Democrat from Illinois, was stripped of his chairmanship of the House Armed Services Committee by the liberal Democrats because he advocated military preparedness for America.
