The most effective barrier against ticks is to wear long pants tucked inside boots and socks. Some studies have suggested that lightcolored clothing also provides some protection.

Some insect repellents are effective, Dr. Burns said, and recommended those containing 30 percent DEET or 1/2 percent pyrethrin. It is most effective when applied liberlly to clothing, especially those areas in contact with brush and grass.

Both adults and children who spend time outdoors should check their bodies frequently for ticks, Dr. Burns said. Both types of ticks must remain attached to their host for several hours to pass any infection.

“The thing to remember is that with Lyme disease the victims feel lousy and then may feel better,” Dr. Burns said. “With Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, the victim feels lousy, lousier and then gets gradually worse.”

Often, the symptoms go unnoticed by both the victim and the attending physician and the body succumbs to the infection. “It rapidly progresses and finally kills,” he said, adding that those who have
