Lyme disease, an infection transmitted by the poppy seed-sized deer tiek, reared its frightful head seven years ago, frightening away outdoor adventurers and causing panic in anyone feeling one of its varied flulike symptoms.
Cases have increased along the Eastern seaboard states, with Virginia recording 32 during the past year. However, the question has been asked whether Lyme disease is as serious a threat as believed. It is most prevalant in the Northeast and in coastal areas. The coastal town of Lyme, Connecticut, where the first case was diagnosed, gave the disease its name.
