Development in and around Virginia’s urban areas has fueled a tremendous need for well-trained, knowledgeable people to oversee golf course care, lawn maintenance for office parks, large feed companies, and other such enterprises, Mr. Constantino said.
But Mr. Bell said the newlyspawned college program is at risk of being discontinued because many students out in the state are still(not aware of its existence and the opportunities it offers.
“A lot of people want to get out there and make money,” he said. “With this program, they can come in, get a lot of information in two years, and then go to work. And this training puts them in a level competitive salary-wise with those in the four-year college programs — often in the low to mid $20,000’s. ” „
Mr. Constantino agreed. “We need to educate young people coming out of high school that there are a lot of good careers, with good salaries, available.”
If Tech’s program fails to attract enough students, Mr. Constantino and others will have to go back to vying for the students coming out of comparable programs, particularly the one at nearby North Carolina State University. There are 23 programs similar to Tech’s at land-grant universities across the country, Mr. Bell said.
