Many of these students are from “farm” backgrounds, Mr. Bell said — they’ve been involved in Future Farmers of America of 4-H as kids. Others, however, are non-traditional students.

Polly Rahner, for instance, moved to Virginia from New Jersey, where she’d been working as a zookeeper. She’s now completed one year of work toward her two-year agriculture technology degree, concentrating in agriculture business.

“It’s a very good program,” she said, “and this way, when I have the degree, I can manage a business instead of being behind the scenes. Or I can start my own business, which is something I’d like to do.”

This summer, Miss Rahner is assisting Tech’s agricultural economics department with computer work.

All students are required to set up a paid internship for the summer between their two years of study, Mr. Bell said.

“The internship is a key component of our program because of the value we place on practical experience,” he said.

In addition, each student chooses an area of concentration from four available options: animal agriculture, plant agriculture, agriculture business or landscape/turf.

To get into the two-year ag technology program, students must have a 2.0 grade-point-average out of high school or a 2.0 on work completed at a community college.
