Congressman Tommy Ribinson, another conservative Democrat from Arkansas, was stripped of his seat on the powerful Energy and Commerce Committee when hd dared to say a positive word about an incumbent Republican Congress-; man. He is now a Republican.
Those relatively few conservative Democrats who still exist in the House of Representatives are iso-1 lated and less effective because they must either sacrifice their principles for political expediency or get tram-* pled underfoot by the tax-and-spencf liberal Democratic majority led by such liberals as Tom Foley, Dick Gephardt and Barney Frank.
French Slaughter is a conservative who belongs to a party whose bedrock principles are conservative.1 He will never have to apologize to his Republican colleagues for his ad-* vocacy of free enterprise, family values, a strong defense, toughed penalties for dope dealers and criminals. Neither will he have to apologize for his refusal to vote foi' spending taxpayer dollars to subsidize pornography disguised as art. •
Perhaps Mr. Smith will now explain what influence he would truly wield if he were a conservative Democrat among the majority of liberal Democrats.
