Rainfall averages for Rappahannock County are above normal and, according to the state climatologist in Charlottesville, should remain the same for most of the summer.
“We are forecasting above normal precipitation levels” for the next couple of months, said Dr. Pat Michaels, adding his office forecasts temperatures, precipitation levels and other weather conditions in three-month blocks and both temperatures and precipatiori levels are based on the average for the month.
While temperatures have been moderate compared to the summer of 1987 and 1988, precipation levels for July are well above normal.
Local weather watcher Dennis Wingfield has recorded 7.09 inches of rain so far in July, compared to last year’s wetter than normal total of 8.42 inches, 1988’s average 3.65 and 1987’s parched 1.97 inches.
Most of the rain recorded so far this month fell in the last two weeks.
Wingfield recorded .65 inches of rain on July 1 and for the eight days following recorded no more than a trace. During this time the temperatures rose and things begin to dry.
