Seedlings offered
The Culpeper Soil and Water Conservation District is holding its annual seedling sale. The district sold approximately 20,000 seedlings last year, and hopes to distribute at least that many this season, and is aiming for a goal of 40,000 seedlings. Orders for Norway Spruce, White Pine and Scotch Pines will be taken until Jan. 1, although the district urges landowners to order early to ensure they will receive their seedlings. Trees will be delivered during March, 1991. For more information about prices and ordering, contact the Soil and Water Conservation District office in Culpeper (703-825-8591).
Park’s hours reduced
With the arrival of winter Shenandoah National Park has reduced the hours of operation of many of its visitor cepters, and ' its campsites are closed for the season. Dickey Ridge Visitor Center will be closed until March 1. The Byrd Visitor Center at Big Meadow will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. until Jan. 1, with the exception of Christmas Day when it will be closed. Beginning Jan. 2, Byrd Visitor Center will -be open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The Center will return to its normal daily schedule on March 1. Ranger programs at Byrd Visitor Center will continue through the winter during the weekend, with "Birds of Prey" presented each Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. The park will remain open daily, unless Skyline Drive is closed because of snow.
Seniors offered discounts
Two county businesses have joined the senior discount program sponsored by the Rappahannock-Rapidan Community Services Center. Faith Mountain Company in Sperryville will give seniors a 10% discount every day on all regularly priced merchandise, and FJackley's Store in Amissville will give a 10% discount every day on all non-grocery items. Seniors should request a Senior I.D. card from the RSVP office in Washington; for information, call (703) 675-3329.
Skywatching offered
The science department at Rappahannock County High School recently acquired a new telescope, and plans to offer public viewing of the night sky. According to Earth Science teacher Tom Von Fange, the telescope will offer excellent views of the moon and planets. Mr. Von Fange will be at the school each Monday and Thursday evening from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Public viewing is available during those hours — weather permitting, of course.
