The president of Virginia’s largest farm organization is calling on state government to either intrude less into rural Virginians’ lives in 1991 or give them the resources to carry out these mandates.
C. Wayne Ashworth told delegates to the Virginia Farm Bureau Federation Annual Convention in Roanoke Nov. 27 that mandates from the General Assembly and Congress are costing rural Virginians much-needed tax dollars.
“Farm Bureau believes all state and federal mandated programs such as The Chesapeake Bay Protection Act and state education initiatives should be fully paid for by the governments that order them,” Mr. Ashworth said. “Our town and county treasuries simply do not have the revenues to pay for these programs ordered from on high.”
In addition to concerns over state-ordered environmental protection programs or education improvements, Mr. Ashworth said Farm Bureau members are worried about legislators meddling in the health insurance field.
