For dairy farmers, the program came out even better than expected, Mr. Courter said, although Virginia’s dairy producers are leery that the ax may fall yet. The government held steady, rather than continued to decrease, the price floor for dairy support prices. And as things stand . now, those prices will remain steady through 1995.
“Dairy producers got more than was anticipated in that regard,” Mr. Courter said.
In summary, the 1990 Farm Bill continues the trend of the 1985 Farm Bill with a move toward a more market-oriented agricultural policy, Mr. Pease said.
“It’ll force farmers to rely more on what the market tells them to do than what the government tells them to do,” he said.
