Tipping causes canes to “bush” out. Most of next year’s crop is borne on these lateral growth.
Brandywine and Royalty purple raspberries may not require tipping.
Remove the fruiting canes after fruiting.
Trailing (thornless) blackberries: You won’t usually tip trailing blackberries in the summer. If the new canes are growing so much they invade the space of the next plant, however, you should tip them back.
Remove two-year-old canes after fruiting.
Erect (thorned) blackberries: Tip back new primocanes two to three inches when they rea,ch a height of between three and four feet. As with black and purple raspberries, you may have to do this two or three times as new canes arise.
Remember to remove fruiting canes immediately after harvest.
