Those of you growing raspberries and blackberries need to prune the brambles in summer, in addition to dormant pruning.
Here are some suggestions that will help you have a productive bramble planting.
Summer red raspberries: Don’t tip new canes (primocanes) in the summer. ■ If the canes grow too much, tip them in the spring of the following year. Remember, however, not to remove more than a fourth of the cane.
Remove canes that have fruited at ground level after harvesting. This provides more space for new, developing canes. It also reduces insect and disease problems.
Also, thin out weak, spindly primocanes at this time.
Fall red raspberries: When you grow raspberries for a fall crop only, you do not have to do any type of summer pruning. You have to remove all canes that are above ground before new canes start emerging.
Black and purple raspberries: Tip new canes when they reach a height of 24 to 30 inches. Remove six to eight inches of terminal growth.
This means going through the planting several times as new canes reach the tipping height.
