use an aggressive man-to-man press, relying on zone defense only against teams with weak outside games, Coach Leake said. “My players are in excellent shape, and they want to play a good, hard, aggressive defense.”
He predicted the strong outside game, coupled with the team’s speed, will create more free throw opportunities. “We are so quick, teams are going to have to foul us to stop us.” The team is practicing free throw shooting every day, and Coach Leake said the goal is to keep the charity percentage in the 70s. Last year, he recalled, in six of the team’s eight losses the margin was two points or less — and in those losses the Panthers shot less than 50 percent from the free throw line.
