Bleu Rock's sign
fails on split vote
The Board of Supervisors split two to two with one abstention on a vote on the sign for the Bleu Rock Inn.
Architect Steve Biegel, representing Bleu Rock’s owners, Bernard and Jean Campagne, told the supervisors they should not consider the wall that the sign is on as 4 part of the sign. He said the wall is a retaining wall that is being built for landscaping purposes and that his clients are willing to scale back the size of the actual sign on the wall to 2v square feet. (Signs in an agricultural district are allowed to be up to 20 square feet in size.)
County Administrator John McC^hy told the supervisors they could approve the sign as necessary for the inn, which was allowed in an agrucultural district aS^a special exception. He said they could consider the fact that\he sign is set back 100 feet from the road once the four-laning is complete as a mitigating factor.
However, he said, “I’m not in faftr of disregarding the structure the sign is on. The only funcfln of the structure is to

Jackson District representative EM Bingham said he had received several calls from people whtfielt the sign should be allowed. “The people in the county wouldlike to see it,” he said. “They feel the inn has been a worthwhile addition to the county. I feel it falls in with the tourist'concept of the county everyone is for. I have no objection to it. It’s no more than many large farms have at their entrances.”
“I’m leery about comments that tfce applicant is a good member of the community,” Mr. McCarthy said. “If you’re going to approve it, it should be because it is 100 feet from the road.”
Stonewall-Hawthorn District representative Robert Anderson said, “I could feel better about it without the rock on top.” >
Mr. Biegel said the “Bleu Rock” logo tould be on both ends of the 20 square foot sign, and he again insisted they should consider the sign separate from the wall issie.
