A Christmas list
As the holidays approach, most of our neighbors are busy planning parties, dinners, visits with family and friends, becoming swept up in the spirit of the season.
Many, too, are making out their holiday shopping lists — both for others and for themselves.
We’ve got a couple of suggestions to tack on to the bottom of those lists, along with the family and friends.
First, consider a gift to the county’s Department of Social Services. The employees there are organizing their annual food drive for the needy, and will appreciate any donation of non-perishable foods to fill the baskets that will be distributed to the county’s neediest families. Cash donations are also being accepted, which will be used to buy turkeys for the holiday baskets.
There is a greater need this season than in years past, according to Social Services workers, since the downturn in the economy has begun to show up as an increase in unemployment and cutbacks of temporary workers.
Second, don’t forget your local volunteer fire and rescue department. The volunteers work hard all year to provide emergency services to their communities. On top of the training and drills necessary to maintain their skills, and responding to the actual emergency calls, most volunteers spend extra time helping their department raise the money to keep it operating.
Even if you contribute during the department’s regular fundraising activities, we’re sure that a little something extra at Christmas time will be appreciated by the volunteers.
Those are merely two suggestions to add to the Christmas list. There are many other organizations that serve various segments of our community — and all will appreciate a holiday donation.
