The Board of Supervisors voted Monday to accept the recommendation of the landfill committee and start charging for accepting tires and brush at the landfill.
The fees will be $1 for a car or light truck tire, $2 each for other truck tires, and $5 each for tractor tires.
For brush, the fees will be $5 for a pickup truck load, $20 for a singleaxle truck load, and $35 for a doubleaxle truck load.
It costs the county $1.75 to have a tire removed from the landfill, and the brush has to be burned. Counties in other jurisdictions have been charging for tires and brush, and the supervisors felt that tires and brush from outside the county were being brought to our landfill because Rappahannock has not charged for these items.
Stonewall-Hawthom District representative Robert Anderson said, “It sounds like a good deal just looking at it, but I think if we start charging for tires at the landfill with the other dumpsters open, they will end up there or along the roads.”
Jackson District representative Ellis Bingham said, “What you’ve got is trucks coming to the landfill with 100 to 200 tires on them and then the county has to pay to have them picked up.”
“We should try this and see how it works,” Supervisor Chairman Hubert Gilkey said. “We might end up with the tires at Scrabble and Huntly.”
