The Virginia Association of Biological Farmers Fall seminar will be held from noon to 5 p.m. on Dec. 8 at the Robert E. Lee Episcopal Church, 123 West .Washington Street in Lexington. VABF is a statewide organization |pf farmers, gardeners and. consumers interested in the promotion of sustainable, ecologically sensitive agriculture. The seminar is open to the public and admission is free.
The basis of life is a living soil, and the purpose of this seminar is to take an in-depth look at the living soil - its air, water, organic matter, and minerals. All of these h,ave to be carefully and knowledgeably managed. What does healthy doil need? how does one build it? what signs (good or bad) should one watch for? Through the knowledge and experiences of two of VABF’s most successful eco-farmers, Reid Putney of Red Gate Farm and Joel Salatin of Polyface Inc., the requirements for building and maintaining a healthy, fertile soil will be examined. Both men are livestock farmers in the Shenandoah Valley. Through study, trial and error each has developed a working system of soil management.
