Retired U.S. Sen. Eugene Joseph McCarthy, 75, a resident of Woodville and four-time presidential candidate, announced Saturday he has thrown his hat into the ring for a fifth time, seeking the Democratic Party’s nomination.
Sen. McCarthy, who could not be reached for comment, was quoted in the Washington Post as saying he would make his campaign “a personal confrontation with the Bush Administration, his concept of the presidency, and his presidential record.”
Sen. McCarthy ran for president most recently in 1988 under the Consumer Party banner. He has also sought the Democratic nomination, finishing second to Lyndon Johnson in the 1968 New Hampshire primary. Sen. McCarthy also ran in 1972 and 1976.
A native of Watkins, Minn., Sen. McCarthy became involved in politics while teaching sociology and economics at St. Thomas College in St. Paul, Minn.
He represented Minnesota’s 4th District in the U.S. House of Representatives for 10 years before that state’s voters elected him U.S. senator in 1958 (he was reelected six years later).
A social commentator, poet and historian, Sen. McCarthy has penned two popular books on Rappahannock County and its people: “The View from Rappahannock” and “The View from Rappahannock II.” He is regularly encountered at the F.T. Valley Grocery weekend mornings.
