Earlier Mr. Chappell said he was having increasing difficulty keeping the number of students on the buses down to avoid crowding and prevent bus rides longer than one hour. He suggested that the school system should consider adding a 19th run next year anyway.
The board voted to allow Chairman Beverly Massie to work with the administration to make the decision.
In other action the School Board:
• Approved changes in the budget that result from additional hinds the school system has received in Chapter 1 funding and federal and state grants.
• Learned that 993 students are enrolled in school, 627 at the elementary school and 366 at the high school. **
• Appointed Kim Harris to the position of school social worker and visiting teacher and David 1 Van de Graaff as in-school suspension teacher. Mr. Van de Graaff will also teach substance abuse prevention. Joyce Good-Ewing will serve as project director and 1 Susan Fox as project coordinator. These positions are being funded through a federal grant to serve “at risk” students.
• Appointed board member John Tole, teachers Frieda Herman, Ron Vickers and Arthur Neufeld, PTO President Greg Robertson, Sharon Kilpatrick and a representative from the Board of Supervisors to the committee to study expansion.
