Party faithful turned out in moderate numbers last Saturday for pre-election rallies at the Washington Fire Hall (for the Republicans) and at the F.T. Valley estate Montpelier (for the Democrats).
Of the eight candidates for state and national office who will be on county ballots Nov. 5, only one—Republican senatorial candidate Ed Robb—failed to appear. The other seven all discussed their major platforms and political philosophies with county voters.
The Republican rally began with a statement by Del. Andy Guest, who said, “It’s a sad day for me to stand here and say I’m not running for re-election in Rappahannock.” The 31st District in the House of Delegates was redrawn this year, excluding the part of Warren County where Del. Guest lives.
“The only up side I can find” in the redistricting plan, said Del. Guest, “is that I’m unopposed. The reality is no one else can find the district.”
