incumbent Sen. Kevin Miller in the 26th District.
Ms. Haynes attacked Sen. Miller’s low ranking in an effectiveness poll, his lack of support among the state’s educational establishment and told county Democrats she lives in the same Harrisonburg precinct as Sen. Miller and plans to beat him there—as well as across the district.
Mr. Baumgardner next brought incumbent Sen. Thomas Michie to the front. Sen. Michie is running to retain his 25th District seat against Republican Ed Robb, a retired FBI agent who has called into question Sen. Michie’s voting record.
The 25th District includes only the Stonewall-Hawthom precinct in Rappahannock, or about 1,500 voters. «
Sen. Michie said rural areas like Rappahannock will be losing clout with the retirement and deaths of a handful of veteran legislators who had established seniority in Richmond.
“If I’m not reelected this area will suffer significantly. The Republicans are never going to have any seniority or anything that counts,” said Sen. Michie.
Jerry Wood, the Democrats’ 31st District House df Delegates candidates, said opponent Mr. Darby has changed his stance on controversial issues such as abortion and impact fees. Mr. Wood, on the other hand, said he is not trying to be “all things to all people.” ' He expressed dismay at the negative turn the campaign has taken, saying he would concentrate during the last month on issues, not negative tactics.
Mr. Wood discussed a radio ad in which Mr. Darby mentioned creating 2,300 jobs “in our community” through his business, which he has since sold for millions of dollars.
Mr. Wood said his definition of community was Fauquier, Rappahannock and Warren (the 31st District), and not Northern Virginia, Florida and California, where Mr. Darby’s jobs were created.
Reached by phone Monday, Mr. Darby said the Wood campaign’s charges were “a means of deflecting attention away from the issues.”
“ ‘The community’ is simply a choice of words to show we feel we’re making a contribution to society,” said Mr. Darby.
