Jackson District representative Ellis Bingham said the proposal could give Rappahannock the “luxury” of not having to open another section at the county landfill in 1994. “We could keep the property and open our own only if they can’t do it.”

Supervisor Chairman Hubert Gilkey agreed but added, “We need more facts.”

When Walter Maben brought his request to rezone 3.06 acres of a 8.06-acre parcel from rural residential to general commercial to the Planning Commission, the planners recommended that the rezoning be denied.

They based their decision on the fact that the parcel is over a mile from the current post office at the intersection of U.S. 211 and Route 642 and the fact that it is on the north side of U.S. 211.

The property is on the northwest corner of the intersection of U.S. 211 and Route 645, a little west and on the opposite side of the road from Countryside Floor Fashions.
