Many environmentalists don’t want any more drilling for oil because oil companies are destroying the ecological balance of the earth. And yet, even though domestic sources are gradually drying up we continue to use even more petroleum products.
The animal rights activists demand that medical experiments w ith animals be stopped and yet they want quick cures for AIDS and cancer. On whom would laboratories experiment as they try to develop effective drugs, children? the homeless? the elderly?
Artists and others demand that our armed forces be dismantled because the Cold War is over so those wasteful defense dollars can be better spent to support the arts. And then along comes a Saddam Hussein, a world class megalomaniac who sought to control half the w'orld’s oil supply and who brought the w orld to the brink of a nuclear disaster. Had the U.S. and other Western nations not been militarily prepared to thwart Hussein’s ambitions we would have become his hostages and be forced to pay whatever price he demanded for oil.
So what is my point? That common sense and moderation must be applied to solve our problems. Extreme solutions never work in the long run. Sure, the federal budget deficit is an outrage. It must be out, but we all must share in those cuts and be prepared to hurt a little.
Sure, there is a lot of fat in the Defense Department budget and it must be cut, but we still must maintain a strong modem military capability. And yes, some oil companies have wrought havoc on nature, however they are not going to great lengths to prevent future eatastrophies. But let’s not let ourselves become dependent on foreign oil.
Certainly the National Endowment for the Ai%s in years past enabled symphony orchestras, opera companies, and theater groups to get started in many ’smaller cities and towns, but then its purposes became distorted as people with little or no artistic talent but with “a message” received grants that enabled them to produce, and in some cases wallow in, pornography and obscenity.
Let’s seek reasoned and moderately conservative answers to our many problems. On Nov. 5 let’s cast our votes for those with clearly defined principles and goals, those with proven experience, those whom we can trust to seek a sensible balance among the many competing forces that want to use our tax dollars.
