Rappahannock Elementary School assistant principal Raye Tupper gave the School Board a summary of the school system’s special education programs at Tuesday night’s meeting.
Mrs. Tupper started by explaining the process that begins when a student is referred for special education. A “child study” committee of teachers, guidance counsellors and frequently the parent meets to decide if the student needs a full evaluation. This committee must meet within 10 working days from the original referral. If the committee does not recommend a full evaluation the committee will continue to monitor the student’s progress in the regular classroom.
