Some students are referred for language and speech problems. They will be evaluated for those problems. However, if a student is referred because there is a concern the student is mentally handicapped, learning disabled or emotionally disturbed he must receive achievement, psychological, physical and a socio-cultural evaluation. Often vision and hearing are tested also, Mrs. Tupper said.

If the student is found to be not eligible for special education the child study committee will continue to monitor his progress in the regular classroom.

If the student is determined to be eligible for special education the committee will determine what handicapping condition makes the student eligible and another committee will develop an “individual education program” for the student that places him in the “least restrictive environment” that will serve his needs within 30 days.
