The team traveled to Woodstock Oct. 3 and beat Massanutten Military Academy, three games to two.
After dropping the first game, the team came back to win the second, 15-8. Detra Funk led Wakefield with nine service points.
Wakefield lost the third game but won by taking the fourth and fifth matches, 15-10 and 15-13. During the final game Coach Pam Henry called a time out with Wakefield behind 10-13. Led by Mary Pat Hickson, they scored five unanswered points to win, leaving their overall record at 2-4.
Wakefield Country Day’s soccer team lost to Emmanuel Christian in Manassas Sept. 27, 7-1. Eleventhgrader Bobby Nelson scored for Wakefield, and sophomore goalie Oliver Cully had 24 saves. All the substitutes saw playing time, but the contest was never close and Wakefield was forced to play defense all game. In other games the team lost to RMA on Oct. 2 by a score of 3-1 and to Shenandoah Valley, 9-0.
The cross country team participated in the Randolph-Macon invitational meet Sept. 28, and both girls and boys placed.
For the girls, Bridget Hickson came in fourth out of the 30 giHs. Her twin sister, Kristin, finished 12th. The Hicksons are seventh graders.
Ninth-grader Matt McCurry came in 20th out of 50 boys, giving him first place among the JV harriers. Freshman Colby Cowherd was 39th. '
In a meet at Notre Dame Sept. 30 Matt McCurry finished fifth overall (out of 14), Colby Cowherd came in ninth and Sandeep Ranade ended up 12th.
Bridget and Kristin Hickson were fifth and sixth among the girl runners.
Against Notre Dame and RMA Oct. 2, Matt McCurry was sixth, Colby Cowherd was 12th and Tim Inglis finished 14th.
At Seton Hall Oct. 4, Matt McCurry was second among 13 boys, Colby Cowherd ninth, Sandeep Ranade 11th and Tim Inglis 12th. Of the 21 girl runners, Bridget Hickson was fourth, Kristin Hickson was 10th, and Laura Cowherd 16th.
