On Nov. 2 the Rappahannock and Madison Extension Service will conduct a field trip to Sotterly, Md.
The Chesapeake Bay study will take place aboard the Dee of St. Mary’s, a working skipjack that is one of the last commercial sailing vessels that is one of the last in the United States.
Oysters, skipjacks, and water quality are bay features that help gain an insight into the bay ecology.
Everyone on board the skipjack will be encouraged to participate by dredging for oysters, trawling for fish, and handling the sails. Experiences like these will help to give a fuller awareness of the social, political, and environmental issues of the Bay.
The cost of the trip is $10, plus the cost of breakfast and dinner. Scholarship money is available.
Applications are available from the Rappahannock County High School and the Rappahannock County Extension Office.
The trip is open to 4-H’ers ages 13-19. All applications need to be in the office by Oct. 15.
