The Rappahannock High girls varsity basketball team is having a tough time of it this year—but last week the Lady Panthers won their first game of the year, beating the Brentsville Tigers.
That win boosted the team’s record to 1-10 overall, 1-8 in the Bull Run District.
Although they’re only scoring about 30 points a game, rebounding totals are a little better—about 38 per game.
Leading the team in scoring through the Brentsville game is point guard Emma Swatman, with a 8.6-point average. Other leaders are forward Sherron Boddie (8 points) and center, Leah Marlett (8.1 points).
The Lady Panthers are suffering from a general lack of experience, according to Coach Renee Leake. “The potential to do well is there, we just haven’t brought it out yet,” she said.
Cross country
team competes
The Rappahannock High cross country team is winless in its first six meets, but runner Jason Waters has been a high point. In four of the six meets he has come in first overall.
His best time so far this year on the home, 2.85-mile course is 14:59, according to Coach Tim Corder.
Coach Corder singled out eighthgraders Mike Wolf and Mark Jenkins. Although their finishes don’t count under Virginia High School League rules, the two underclassmen have turned in some strong performances, he said.
Wakefield Country
Day sports results
Wakefield Country Day School’s volleyball team beat Emmanual Christian in Manassas Sept. 27, winning three of four games.
Wakefield won the first match, 15-11; lost the second, 16-18; then won the third, 15-13. In the third game the high point scorers were Elizabeth Hickson (six points) and Kristin Hickson (five).
