Assistant Superintendent Robert Chappell noted that last year 133 students were receiving special education services including speech therapy. Mrs. Tupper said so far this year 30 students have been referred to the child study committee at the elementary school, and high school special education teacher Winnie Heberle said four have been referred at the high school.
Mr. Chappell told the board members that the school system recently received another student who needs a wheel chair. The school system has one regular bus with a wheel chair lift, but it is serving another student on a different bus route. The school system also has a small bus with a lift that was used in earlier years to transport handicapped students. He said he was exploring various methods of serving the new student. Temporarily the smaller bus will be used.
One way to deal with the problem would be to alter bus routes so the one large bus could provide transportation to both wheel-chair bound students, he said. That would cost about $1,000, but would involve changing many stu- . dents’ bus routes and schedules, making longer rides for several students.
