Mr. O’Connell said he and his partner had worked hard building up their business. He said a couple spending a night at The Inn contributes $12.50 to the town treasury. “It is noticed and resented,” he added.
He said the situation would be improved if people in town were more welcoming to The Inn’s visitors. “Let the word out to the town to improve itself, establish the reputation is being warm, friendly and supportive of the hand that is feeding it,” he said.
When it was the council members’ turn to comment on the objections to the budget and the tax. Treasurer Brad Fisher noted that buying the library building for a town hall had cost the town $50,(X)0, not $150,000, because the old tow n hall had been sold to the county.
Mayor Dean Morehouse defended the decision to purchase the building, saying it is the only unaltered building designed by noted architect James Leake Powers left in town. He said it would have been unreasonable to put as much control on private owners as would have been necessary “to protect that one building” if it had been sold to a third party rather than bought by the town.
He said the building is also needed to store town records, which are now scattered in private homes.
Mr. Fisher noted that when the towm budget was $13,000 the town only paid for trash collection and street lighting.
