Mr. Morehouse said, "Everything was out-dated.” He said the meals and lodging taxes allowed the town “to catch up for a lot of years of neglect.”
Members of the council also said they wanted to be informed whenever guests of The Inn were made to feel unwelcome. They said many hours had been devoted to trying to solve the problem of a small group of mostly young people harassing customers at The Inn.
Town Attorney Frank Reynolds said he had spent many hours working for the town trying to solve the problem. “I understand what you are saying," he said. “Unfortunately there is a small group of reprobates who resent anything of quality."
Council member Susan Parrish asked why the Washington Volunteer Fire Department receives more help from the government than other county fire departments. The town budget includes about $12,000 for the fire department.
