Sound advice
Superintendent David Gangel gave the Class of ’92 some good advice during his short address Saturday morning.
He recalled how many of his friends dropped out of high school in Akron, Ohio, to take jobs at the rubber plants that then dominated that town. Those teens, Dr. Gangel recalled, were making as much as $40,000 a year—and that was some years ago.
Suddenly, however, times changed. The rubber companies found they could pay foreign workers a lot less than the $14 to $18 per hour those high school dropouts were making, and one by one, the plants closed down. Now, there are no rubber plants in Akron.
Now, sadly, there are few jobs Dr. Gangel’s old friends are qualified fqr. The meager skills they may have learned on the job don’t traqsfer well to the technologically-based workplaces that afce replacing industrial jobs across this country. '
Those teens, once wealthy, are now facing middle age without the skills they need to get anything more than a subsistence-level job. Dr. Gangel, in his doctoral robes, provided eloquent testimony that his choice, though it meant less financially in the short run, was proven by time to be the wise choice. ,
Dr. Gangel offered the grads a choice: to contribute either “cheap labor or high performance.” During the past five years, Dr. Gangel has led the schools to new standards, and his teachers and administrators have accepted the challenge. The result is a “high performance” county school system that is continually advancing and improving.
Dr. Gangel’s challenge is timely, and sage. If the Class of ’92 follows the example set by the county’s schools through their teachers and administrators, they should do well. And, they will contribute high performance, not cheap labor.
