think it (the deficit spending) was because people weren’t willing to make the tough choices,” Vickery said.
He blamed the president for failing to introduce a balanced budget and Congress for refusing to send the president a balanced budget. As for which tough choices need to be made, Vickery said he is still working out the particulars and talking with people in the 10th. Cutting federal spending is a must, he said, and new taxes may or may not be one answer.
“I’m not going to say ‘watch my lips, no new taxes,’ but I don’t think we can talk about new taxes until we get our house in order,” Vickery said.
Vickery said he believes in urban enterprise zones to help American cities atract businesses and raise cash and in privatizing some government operations and agencies.
“I think nothing is sacrosanct. I'm not prepared to say what (will be cut or privatized). We are developing those alternatives and options now,” Vickery said.
Vickery also claimed the government needs to overhaul the way it does business with business, saying anti trust laws need a rewrite and the federal government needs to support business.
“Government has this adversarial relationship with business. We need to get away from that and support business,” Vickery said, adding that many of the details of his plan will come after listening to people in the 10th.
