The accident that claimed the life Of a Viewtown woman Monday af- " temoon remains under investigation, Virginia State Trooper C.A. Moore said Tuesday.
Mary Louise Walker, 55, was
killed when her 1991 Ford 'jaurus was hit head-on by a pickup track on Route 642, six-tenths of a mile south of Route 611. Mrs. Walker was airlifted to Fairfax Hospital by the AirCare med-evac helicopter, where she died less than two hours after the 3:30 p.m. accident.
Moore said Mrs. Walker was southbound on Route 642 when a 1989 Toyota pickup track, driven by Wayne D. Dodson, 22, also of Viewtown, crossed the center line and hit her car. Moore said Dodson told him that he swerved to avoid another vehicle that had pulled from a private drive.
The third driver, William G. Faunce, 53, of Gainesville, was not involved in the accident and his 1988 GMC pickup track was not damaged.
Motire said that, despite wearing a seat belt and using an airbag, Mrs. Walker suffered multiple severe injuries in the accident. “She was an innocent victim,” Moore said, “someone who was just in the wrong place at the wrong time,”
Dodson remains in Fauquier Hospital undergoing treatment for extensive lower body injuries he suffered in the accident.
Moore said a decision about whether charges will be filed in the accident will be made after his investigation is completed.
Thomas W. MeFarland, 22, of Sperryville, was charged April 22 With driving undfei*"the'influence; driving while suspended, failure to stop for police and failure to wear a seat belt after a short pursuit ended in a one-car accident.
Trooper Moore said he received a report of vehicles being operated around Sperryville in a reckless manner, and when he observed one of the vehicles, the driver fled.
After driving east on U.S. 211 at a high rate of speed, Moore said, the driver lost control of the 1979 Chevrolet pickup truck. >;■ The track failed to negotiate a curve and ran off the right side of the road, crossed back over both lanes and ran off the left side of the road. It flipped end-over-end several ;times, Moore said, before coming to rest in a field near the intersection of [Route 1003.
* [ Moore said McFarland, who was - not wearing a seat belt, was thrown ; from the track as it flipped, and a juvenile passenger remained inside .the truck. Both were taken to Gulpqper Memorial Hospital where they were treated for minor injuries and 1 released.
The track, which was owned by panny Ray Baldwin, also of Sperryville, was destroyed in the accident.
