A number of charities will benefit from the 68th running of the Virginia Gold Cup.
On race day, the Warrenton Lion’s Club will raffle a BMW. Proceeds from raffle ticket sales will be distributed by the Lions Club to a number of charitable causes throughout the year.
The Lions — who support several programs on a regular basis including sight, hearing and drug awareness programs — also will sell in-house Gold Cup merchandise and the official race program as they have for the past several years.
The Fauquier High School Booster Club will sell Member’s Hill badges on race day. Proceeds from the Boosters support the high school’s athletes in a number of ways.
Each year four to six college scholarship are awarded to deserving students by the Boosters. The club also gives cash donations to each team at the school and purchases special sports equipment as the need arises.
The Warrenton-Fauquier Jaycees will help direct cars to their designated parking areas for the Virginia Gold Cup. The funds raised from their Virginia Gold Cup involvement support a number of community projects.
Two Boy Scout Troops will be present at this year’s races. Troop #1475 from Warrenton will count cars as they enter. Money earned that day go toward purchasing camp gear and sending boys to summer camp.
Explorer Troop #1077, sponsored by the Fauquier County Sheriffs Department, will conduct a number of litter sweeps thoughout the day.
By conducting the litter sweep often, their work in the clean-up of the race course after the races will be easier, and the Explorers will recycle many materials that might otherwise find they way into the county landfill.
The public also is encouraged to give “Litter Police”, aka the Explorers, trash throughout the day,
AC Trash of Warrenton also will aid in recycling by handing out two separate bags to racegoers. One bag should be used for recyclables and the other for the rest of the trash. Everyone will be strongly encouraged to use these bags, as they will be collected at the end of the day.
Boxes for recycling also will be scattered throughout the vast parking and spectator areas.
