ginia Gold Cup race meet on the first Saturday in May to officially herald spring in the Commonwealth.
Today, the Gold Cup has evolved into more than a race meet that attracts the finest timber and hurdle horses in America. It is a social event, a spectacle, a huge picnic and a place where diverse people converge to share a common bond of love of horses and the outdoors.
Also, the Virginia Gold Cup at Great Meadow is exposed to more than just Fauquier residents. More than 40,000 live spectators from throughout the region attend the annual event. This year, 2.5 million people in the Mid-Atlantic region will have access to a 90-minute Home Team Sports telecast of the day’s racing. In addition, ESPN will show the running of the featured event on its Kentucky Derby Special program.
“The best horses come to Great Meadow because of our course maintenance program, and our strong purse structure,” said Victoria Petty, race director of the Virginia Gold Cup. “Spectators look forward to the stunning panoramic view and day of championship racing.”
Gates will open for the public at 10 a.m. on Saturday with prerace entertainment beginning at 10:30 a.m.
