Newman warmed up for his wins with a second in the first race, the two-mile $10,000 Stratford-Upon-Avon hurdle race. Riding Concatenation, owned by Richard P. Jones, Newman tried to catch Springbrook Farm’s Colonel Kerfoot in a heated stretch run but was beaten by half-a-length at the wire.

Private Gary, the first local horse to win the Virginia Gold Cup in eight years, was greeted by tumultuous cheers from most of the crowd of more thah 12,000 picnicking spectators at the Broadview course on Saturday.
Owned by Dr. Joseph Rogers, MFH of the Loudoun Hunt, and ridden by former owner Randy Waterman, Private Gary recently was named Virginia timber horse of the year because of his victories in the two toughest point-to-point races.
Donna Truslow, his trainer, says Private Gary is “a very relaxed hunter” now has a record 10 straight wins, six of them in hunt meets.
The charisma of Gold Cup was particulary evident on this sparkling, sunny day with the brisk breeze snapping the “racking silks” flags and sending dozens of straw hats sailing. Hundreds of children, dozens of dogs — and even a pet piglet on a leash — scampered up and down the hills from which the course is in full view.
